So I just got back from Tough Mudder SoCal and I must say, WOW! It is by far the toughest event that I have ever done in my life. Located in beautiful Big Bear California, it was one to remember.
I raced this weekend with my brother’s Arnel and Fermin, my sister in law, Jasmine, and other awesome people from California and Washington. We had a great group and we really were a team from the beginning. Something you need to make it through Tough Mudder SoCal.
Now my brother’s helped me prepare for this race by giving me a checklist on what to wear, supplements and foods to carry with, and mentality tips. We also trained up mountains in the Las Vegas area beforehand to get used to climbing hills. We went in the race at Big Bear and were smacked in the face by how many hills back to back that were structured into the 10+ mile event.
There were 21 obstacles and about 15+ mountains and steep hills that were required to pass before becoming an official Tough Mudder in SoCal. In addition to that, they had obstacles in between the mountain climbs such as the Arctic Enema, a pool of water packed with ice till the water basically freezes. When I jumped in, all my mind was saying is, “I need to hurry!” Your body goes into a quick shock and you need to react before your body becomes hypothermic. No Joke!
Another cool obstacle was “Walk The Plank”. A 15 foot plank where you jump into cold temperature deep waters. You better know what your doing and you better know how to swim. I was at a stage where I started to cramp so I was worried about cramping when I landed in the cold waters.
Fortunately one of my strengths are swimming, and if I started to cramp up in my legs, I would have enough skill to swim with solely upper body strategies. If you don’t know how to swim, then you must have a partner on your team that can jump in first then spot you to shore when you jump in.
Because I had my brother’s who have already done such races as Tough Mudder, Super Spartan, Spartan Military Sprint, Warrior Dash, I had a lot of help as I said earlier on preparing my meals and amenities. So I bought all my necessary gear and trained. Come to find out that I trained a little too thin for this event.
The reason is, is that Tough Mudder’s are the same but different. Let me explain. A TM in Tampa Florida is much easier in my
brother’s opinion than the Tough Mudder SoCal in Big Bear. This is because of the difference in elevation and the mountains required to finish. Florida just doesn’t have the hills to compete with the difficulty of Big Bear California. So you may have to take more time to finish the Tough Mudder in Big Bear versus in Tampa due to the mountain climbing involved.
So when I did TM this weekend in SoCal, I realized that this was an event of strategy, not only endurance, or running, or how much weight you can lift in the gym. This is about strategy on how to help your fellow team mate over a 12 ft wall, or lifting them up from Mount Everest, another TM obstacle.
It’s about finding the best side of the mountain trail that best gives you the advantage on your footing to make it up the climb. It’s about fighting through injuries and cramping if it unfortunately happens during the race. How about helping someone down a long steep hill when you are struggling yourself. Are you a warrior, a savior, and angel for someone, or are you just an average Joe that will help no one to get ahead? When fatigue and doubt sets in, are you gonna keep going and prove your mental toughness? Or are you going to break down and blow your chance to achieve such a huge physical feat in your life by helping others achieve theirs?
When we raced this weekend, we let our whole team know that we are here for each other. No one was going to cross that finish line unless we had everyone we started with also finishing with us. It was my responsibility as a team mate to make sure my partner, Jackie was replenished, pacing herself, giving it all she got, and leaving nothing out on the course when it’s all said and done. I’ll admit that some on our team thought about bailing out. All that means is that this was exactly what they needed to take that step in life to define what they really can do. It also shows them what their maximum capacities are capable of when their bodies tell them to quit. Just because your body shuts down, it doesn’t mean you do.
You have the ability to refresh mentally and physically and keep going. Preparation is key in helping that all happen.
Tough Mudder SoCal – Finding The Beast In Me To Finish
Even though I carbed up the night before the race, ate a plain bagel and some grapes in the morning about 2 hours before, I unfortunately started to cramp up in my legs about 3 miles in. Yes, it sucks! All I was thinking was that I had at least 7 more miles of mud, electric shock, long high mountains, and more. Could I physically complete this with stiff legs and waving muscles on my calves. It was terrible! I knew one thing, I wasn’t going to throw in the towel. I had to learn how to manage my cramps and compete through it. It hurt physically, but mentally, I had already made the choice that I was going to complete the race and there was nothing that was going to change about that. Obviously, I ended up fighting through it, and I earned my orange Tough Mudder head band.
Cramping can really be a huge problem, especially if you let it get in the way of your mind. If it happens to you, I would recommend that you just accept that it happened, and learn how to deal with it in a way that you stay focused and strong. Keep going cause the cramps will come and go occasionally and you just have to find ways to do things with the cramps in full effect. The way I kept going was that knew I couldn’t fully straighten my legs to prevent my legs from locking up so I had to walk in squat formation with my legs wide. Kind of like I had something stuck up my butt, literally. It looks ugly, but I didn’t care, I just wanted to keep going and walk out the stiffness. Once the temporary cramps left, I was in full competitive mode until it happened again. So yeah, you can find ways to complete a Tough Mudder when cramping happens. Just choose to finish and finish.
Training For Tough Mudder
After completing Tough Mudder SoCal and talking to my brother who has done many TM’s, I really think that each tough mudder is different. If you are entering a tough mudder in Florida, you can probably train different than doing a TM involving mountains like in Big Bear. Learn how to fuel yourself. Start training 3 months in advance and try different eating plans to find what works best for your energy and endurance. Try going through programs like Insanity or Insanity Asylum. It will increase your muscle stamina and leg power which is crucial. Insanity programs were designed by pro athletes for optimal performance in sports. You get good at these programs, you will be well prepared for any endurance race today.

I really enjoyed the whole Tough Mudder SoCal event in general. From the organization to the costumes, to the display of teamwork, to the comradery. Once you race one, I think you’ll be hooked. Today I’m embarking on a trip to Big Bear California to race with my team at Tough Mudder. It’s a 10-12 mile mud obstacle course that will test your physical and mental toughness as well as teamwork ability. This is going to be my first one, but fortunately, my brother’s are veterans and gave me a lot of good tips to get fully prepared for this weekend. I wanted to share with you what I did to prepare.
Training for Tough Mudder
First off, I knew that running was my weakness so I started running a few miles about 3 times per week about 6 weeks ago. I live in a mountain master community so the streets are inclined and it helps to get that extra power training to run in different levels.
I also went mountain trail running on steep hills to test my leg strength endurance. In addition to that, I also did sprints up slippery sandy terrain and treaded safely but steadily down as well.
The most important training I did in my opinion was Insanity and Insanity Asylum. These programs get your cardio to tip top shape and also improves your leg strength endurance. To help with my leg endurance, I chose to get SportLegs, a supplement to help with the lactic acid build up that forces many people to tire and slow down when fatigue. This can really slow you down in any workout and especially for a long endurance race, I want to be well prepared.
What to Wear For Tough Mudder
I want to be as comfortable as possible as weird as that may sound. You won’t be as comfortable as sleeping in your bed after a long day, but what I mean is as comfortable with the circumstances that I will be faced with. Muddy waters, electric shock wires, barb wires, wall climbing, Ice pools, and more.
So my brother’s recommended me the following to wear:
1. Dry fit socks 2. Compression under pants(shorts) 3. Dry fit Nike running shorts 4. Compression undershirt 5. Dry fit shirt, fitted if possible 6. Cross country or breathable trail running shoes
So after that recommended list, I got it all ready and I’m set with my attire. In addition to this, I also will be wearing a CamelBak for hydration and other items that will help me with sustaining energy throughout the race.
Supplements recommended for Tough Mudder

Required Equipment For Body Beast Success

You may or may not be obese today. Either way, we are all equal and the only difference is the decisions we make daily that separate us apart and determine where we end up. Guess what? It’s never too late or too early for preventing obesity and set yourself up to make a decision to make better choices today for a better tomorrow.
Someone once asked me, “What makes you think that if you’re too lazy to exercise, you can actually keep it off after you lose it?” It made me think. At that time, I was overweight and tipping the scales at almost 200 lbs at 5’7″. Not a good proportion especially when it wasn’t healthy weight. What he was trying to tell me was that it’s not about losing the weight, it’s about losing the mind of thinking that got me where I was. Overweight, prone to diseases, tired, depressed, you get the point. It’s all the things you get when you neglect preventing obesity.
According to the National Weight Control Registry, 80% of those people who lose weight eventually gain it back. Only 20% actually keep it off for a period of longer than several months. What is the difference? Teaching yourself the right way of living in the process. That is, proper nutrition and eating habits, exercising to gain strength and burn calories, and have a team to support you, like me and my team of goal minded individuals committed to helping people make that change.
Preventing Obesity First With Realization
A person must learn how to properly take care of their bodies and change their eating habits in the process of losing weight. In addition, exercise is a must! An hour a day is recommended no matter if it is walking, running, or climbing mountains, or swimming. You need to do some sort of exercise to get yourself burning calories.
In preventing obesity, you can remember one thing that will make all the difference. Calories! The very thing that makes you gain weight. Most people eat more calories than they think and then never take the initiative to live an active lifestyle. Salads are one of the foods that can look healthy but contain over 700 calories in one serving. I was watching the show “Extreme Makeover” the weight loss edition a month ago and this lady was on there that was obese. With the help of Chris, the personal Trainer on that show, she lost over 170 pounds and went from obese at over 300 lbs, to losing over half her total weight and living a brand new life.
In this particular night of Extreme Makeover, they showed her eating habits and showed that she actually was sometimes eating up to 4,000 calories in one meal. That meal consisted of a cake, a salad containing over 1,000 calories itself, and some meats and carbs. It was disgusting but she had no idea what she was eating. On top of that, she was a couch potato and didn’t take the initiative to go out and burn calories through exercise. First step in preventing obesity is recognizing what got you there or what is currently getting you there.
Imagine taking in that many calories, and being a lazy bum. It is a recipe for death!

Simple Things To Try In Preventing Obesity
So, back to how to lose weight when you are obese. We went over how changing your eating habits and exercising are vital. So what are some other things that can help one make that change.
Here are a few things that you can do in preventing obesity:
Park in the rear of the parking lot and make that walk to the front door of the mall or grocery store. Stop being lazy!
Get your rear off the couch and go walking.
Stop watching that television. TV makes you lazy to get up and do the things you should be doing
When eating your meal, eat your favorite things on the plate first so you don’t have to be forced to get to it last when everything else is gone.
Stop looking for someone to do things for you. Get up and do it yourself.
Start believing that you were meant to be better and healthier.
Believe it is possible to be healthy and strong and live a longer life for you and your loved ones.
Realize the road that you are taking is a dead end road
Make your family part of your reason to change. They are the one’s that will suffer, not you, if something happens to you.
Know that most diseases that come with obesity can be avoided and/or healed if you act now.
Everything worth fighting for in life must come with a reason. That includes preventing obesity. If you don’t have a reason, how can you make a plan, without a plan, how can you hit your goals, and if you don’t hit your goals, how can you ever achieve your dreams? It all starts with setting an important “WHY”. Mine was to live longer for my family and get off the dead end road I was on. Guess what? I got off of it and you can too.
Why do you want to lose weight?
To live longer for your family
To qualify for your dream job
To be able to do more life things on a daily basis
To wear the clothes you really want to wear
To feel more confident in public or in pictures
Whatever your reason is, it’s worth it to make changes to your diet and daily activity. You need someone to take you from day 1 and show you the way. You also need to make a promise to the people who mean the most to you in life and let them know what you are doing. Keep them updated every week on your progress, let them know that you won’t let them down. If you find that your gym equipment is no longer serving your goals, consider selling gym equipment online.
Why do this? This will keep you accountable. You won’t want to let these people down. Yes, times will get tough and you will feel like quitting sometimes. This is when they will rally behind you and you will start to see people believing in you for the first time in years. Trust me, this is what happened to me and it kept me focused on my goals. Here are my 3 recommended steps that will get you on the right track to preventing further obesity.
1. Detox Your Body To prime it up for optimal nutrition and exercise
2. Strengthen your joints and mental focus by taking on a light exercise program. This will get your feet wet and get your body ready for the next level to burn fat.
3. Step it up and continue your fitness with a mix of higher intensity resistance and cardio training plus keeping the proper nutrition in place. To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your exercise equipment, consider looking for cross trainer repair near me.
You will need continued support and a positive community of people around you to make it through. Listen to music and watch movies that will feed you strength and not garbage. Don’t listen to the negative comments around you because they just don’t want you to succeed and prove them wrong.

When I started doing P90x last year, i was the kinda guy who just put on some shorts and put in the DVD. I’m not the type of guy who takes a long time to prepare to look good to do something I’m gonna sweat and look worked after doing. So I work out barefoot most of the time.
I know that working out barefoot is never recommended in gyms because of the use of heavy weights in the area and the liability issues that arise, but is it okay to do if you are working out at home with only minimal resistance bands and pull up bars are needed?
Listen to your body!
When I did martial arts, we used to warm up barefoot because shoes weren’t allowed on the mats. We did lateral movement warm ups for wrestling and also rolling warm ups like hip escapes, and sprawls to name a few. This experience has gotten me used to working out barefoot.
However, one thing that does matter when I work out barefoot is that my calves get worked more than when I have shoes on. This happens to a lot of people I know. So when doing exercises like Insanity, I will actually where shoes due to the intense jumps and lateral movements involved. They are a little more intense than the average workout so I want to protect myself to the fullest and prevent injury.
When doing exercises involving the resistance bands in the P90X program, I will actually keep a pair of sandals close by for when I need to trap the bands under my foot for pulling. If you tried to trap resistance bands under bare feet, you will notice some pinching so that’s why I slip on a fast pair of sandals for that particular situation. Call it weird but everyone has their own preference and mine is being as loose as possible without jeopardizing results.
During my transformation video below, you can see that I wore shoes sometimes and sometimes worked out barefoot.
My point is is that you can workout barefoot for certain routines but sometimes you may need to where shoes for safety purposes and to prevent injury like I do with Insanity. Insanity’s lateral exercises are far more intense than a standard side to side so you want to make sure your ankle and everything are prepared for what’s to come.
So working out barefoot in my opinion is okay but there are times when preference and ignorance must be disciplined for lifetime fitness to endure in your life.

As many of you know, I was attending an event this past weekend in Las Vegas called Coach Summit. It was for Beachbody Coaches that commit their lives to helping people live healthy and fulfilling lives.
If you didn’t already know, I actually live here in Las Vegas but had the opportunity to stay in the hotel, New York New York for the event with my brothers, and my other fellow coaches. Although we were there to learn, discover new programs that were coming out soon, and find out the newest flavor of the none other than Shakeology that was introduced on the 25th of June 2012, we also had the opportunity to bond as a team.
Coach Summit went on for about 3 days, and I must say, Beachbody doesn’t hold back when it comes to entertaining and educating their coaches. They had all the pro trainers there such as Tony Horton(P90X), Shaun T(Insanity, Insanity Asylum), Les Mills Pump Trainers, Sagi Kalev(Body Beast) and more! Not only were they there to meet and mingle with but they also held their own private workouts, spoke about business, motivation, tips, and what’s to come.
On Saturday Morning, June 23rd, around 6 a.m., there were 5,000 coaches that packed the streets of Las Vegas around Tropicana Hotel and Casino to workout with all the trainers for 20 minutes per trainer. This was called the “Super Workout”! Each of them led us into a variety of exercises that complimented their style. By the end, I couldn’t imagine feeling better around so many people at one time that shared the same vision of being healthy, getting fit, and helping the world do the same. Beachbody also had gatherings to cap off the days where you could snack on appetizers and sip on some cocktails by the pool at the MGM Grand. It was held at the MGM’s Wet Republic pool area. They had human mermaids in the pool, a live DJ, dancing, and a lot of people meeting each other for the first time beyond their Facebook profiles. As a Beachbody coach, you have many people on your team that live in other parts of the nation and it was nice to finally see someone in person and experience their real personalities.
For me, the highlights were getting the scoop on all our new things happening such as this:
Seeing Apolo Ohno as part of approving and helping Beachbody come up with the best programs today just inspires me. To me, if credible pro athletes are behind the programs that a company is putting out, I want a piece of that!
But I can honestly say that even though it was for 3 days only, I really missed my wife and kids. I can’t spend that much time away from them like that or I get a little weak and quiet after some time. My family empowers me I guess you can say.

Until you have read this….Is the Chocolate Vegan Shakeology just like the Tropical Strawberry Vegan flavor? I’ll be honest with you that when the Tropical Strawberry vegan Shakeology first came out several months ago, I was so excited.
